Israeli president plans extraordinary visit to Turkey

A statement from the Israeli president's office said that President Isaac Herzog was preparing to pay a visit to Turkey, a rare visit that would mark the end of years of strained relations. According to a report in Dawn news agency, the statement said that a high level Turkish delegation is expected to visit Israel this week in which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's aide Ibrahim Qalan and Deputy Foreign Minister Saadat Onal. The Israeli Presidency said that the visit of the Turkish delegation was part of preparations for the forthcoming visit of President Isaac Herzog to Turkey.

In a televised interview last month, the Turkish president said, "We have taken the position that we have taken this opportunity to open up the relations between Turkey and Israel as a new opportunity." Outside, the president's office declined to comment on Tuesday's statement. The court's statement did not specify the date of Turkey's decision, but state television TRT reported that it took place on March 9 and 10.

Relations between Turkey and Israel have been strained since 2010 when 10 civilians were killed in an Israeli attack on a Turkish navy carrying aid to the Gaza Strip. In recent months, however, the two countries have been active in interacting with each other, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, speaking by telephone with the Israeli president and other Israeli leaders.
